Early multi-tier cage systems primarily focused on spatial efficiency, while contemporary improvements increasingly prioritize hens' natural behavioral expression and physiological needs. How to provide hens with a more species-appropriate living environment within limited tiered space has become a shared challenge for equipment R&D and farming practices.

 

New multi-tiered systems now incorporate more welfare-oriented design elements. For instance, facilities are provided to satisfy instinctive behaviors like scratching and perching; cage layouts are optimized to increase activity space; and improvements to slatted floor materials and slope angles enhance comfort and foot health. Environmental control systems have also become more sophisticated, striving to ensure appropriate lighting, ventilation, and temperature across all tiers. These improvements aim to alleviate stress associated with high-density housing, reflecting an industry shift in thinking from mere “survival” to enhancing “quality of life.”

 

This shift is also influencing market dynamics and regulations. Some regions have introduced more specific requirements for stocking densities and facility standards, prompting farms to upgrade equipment. Consumer awareness of animal welfare-friendly products is growing, creating demand pressure from the supply chain's end. Thus, the development of modern tiered equipment represents not only technological evolution but also the industry's pursuit of a new equilibrium between social responsibility, market demands, and production efficiency.
